#SexySnippets IMMORTAL SEDUCTION by Jennifer Lynne

It’s Sunday, and here at Sexy Romance Stories we’ve decided to join the Sexy Snippets Hop hosted by The Nuthouse Scribblers.

We’ll be taking it in turns each week to post seven sentences from our current WIP or published work.

Today’s Sexy Snippet is from Jennifer Lynne’s work-in-progress (unedited), IMMORTAL SEDUCTION (GODS OF LOVE 4):

The slow grin that accompanied her words highlighted the fullness of her lips and he pictured them wrapped around his now definitely hardening cock. Would they be cold and fresh from the sea, those lips, or would the heat of her mouth draw even more of his blood to that hungry appendage between his legs? Would she suck and lick, or use her teeth to vary the sensory exploration of his organ?

Jesus! What was wrong with him tonight? He blinked and shook his head to clear the lustful thoughts away, but she was there again in front of him. Naked, and laying his own overcoat down on the sand, bending forward with her butt in the air as if offering up the valley of her sex for his own personal use.

We’d love you to share your thoughts here! Then why not check out the other Sexy Snippets on offer this week.

For more information about IMMORTAL SEDUCTION and the first three novellas in the GODS OF LOVE series, visit Jennifer Lynne’s website.

New book release: three sexy gods in one erotic collection!

Imagine a hot Greek sex god appears in your life determined to give you – and your partner if you happen to be in a relationship – lessons in sexual desire. What would you do?

  1. Faint?
  2. Scream and go running to the nearest neighbor – or perhaps a handy bottle of wine?
  3. Tell him to begone and get back from whence he came?
  4. Welcome him in with open arms and a curious heart?

If you chose option ’4′ then you’re in good company! In the just-released GODS OF LOVE Series Bundle, three sets of lives are changed forever when the gods of desire – the erotes – decide to offer their own brand of sexual healing to modern-day people in need.

But it is not only the mortals in these stories who discover the true meaning of love. Through their interactions these three ancient gods learn that there is more to this mysterious gift called love than even they knew.

Excerpt:

Look at me, Gina.” His voice commanded, echoing around her and through her body all the way to her bones.

She did look. She had no choice; that voice compelled her to do as he bid. And what she saw filled her with awe.

His hair was moving like it was electrically charged; the eyes flashed like green beacons lighting up the golden aura surrounding them both. Green and gold. His aura. It emanated from his caramel skin, that golden light, and bathed her in warmth and a strange, drowsy kind of sexual energy. It made her want to fuck the nearest living person, but at the same time it enticed her to snuggle in to its heat. Power and desire. Strength and security. Above all, acceptance. His aura accepted her for who she was.

Disbelief, ridicule, everything negative was gone from her head as reached out a trembling hand and caressed his granite cheek. “I…” She shook her head and tried again. “I see you.”

Now it was his turn to suck in a breath. “I don’t show myself often,” he said, and the voice was no longer compelling. Instead it held a hint of uncertainty. “Ever, actually.”

She loved that uncertainty. It gave her the strength to lean in and kiss him. Beneath her lips she tasted the heart of him. A unique, delicious experience.

To taste the soul of a god.

“Then I’m the luckiest woman in the world, aren’t I?”

He nodded gravely. “You are.”

She burst out laughing, and if there was an edge of hysteria to her laughter, who the hell could blame her? She didn’t even know where they were, nor how he had saved them. Maybe she really was dead, and that would mean he was, too. Yet even in this moment, he still had that ego. It was a part of him, though, and she wouldn’t change it.

“I see you,” she said again. “And I accept you, Himeros, god of sexual desire. I accept everything about you.”

He bowed his head for a moment, then looked up into her eyes. There was raw emotion contained within that gaze. “Then  I am the lucky one,” he said.

When friends become lovers – is it a good idea?

My latest erotic romance release explores the theme of friends who become lovers and it got me thinking – is friendship really the best place to kick start a romantic relationship? Or is sex with a friend ultimately the quickest way to ruin a good friendship?

In SEX CLUB SECRETS (GODS OF LOVE 3), best friends Ella and Kade are given a helping hand toward love by Anteros, the god of unrequited love. But even with the help of an ancient god, the transition from friend to lover is not without its difficulties. Bisexual hero, Kade, is torn in two directions:

Sex Club Secrets

Jesus, God, it was like his ultimate sexual fantasy right here, seeing the two halves of his craving come together in one divine moment. Pure muscle, masculine strength, and an exciting, rock-hard body on the one side, and the familiar softness and femininity of the woman he wanted to love and cherish on the other.

But the exquisite beauty he found in the couple before him was the very reason he hadn’t spoken up before now. How could he commit to any sort of relationship with Ella if his orientation meant he might never be completely fulfilled? How can I be sure I’ll be faithful, if we end up together? How can I put her through that hurt if I can’t help but stray from the straight path? He couldn’t put her in that situation. It was just too unfair.

He leaned forward and touched the glass, spreading his fingers wide against the cool surface and wishing instead he could touch the heat of those rose-colored nipples.

What would it feel like to take one of Ella’s breasts into his mouth? What would she taste like? He ached to suckle on his friend, run his tongue over her skin, inhale her perfume and hear her moan in the way he’d been imagining in his dreams almost every night for the past few months.

Like my heroine Ella, I believe that friendship can be a beautiful place from which to build a sexual relationship. You go into it knowing the other person really well, aware that they also know the “real” you so you don’t have to pretend to be anything bigger, better, or different than what you are. Ella says at one point in the story:

I know what he is, Anteros, and I love him anyway.

If you’re already friends then presumably you have a head start on good communication, compatibility and a genuine liking for the other person – all key ingredients for a successful romantic relationship.

What do you think?

Should friends stay…just friends, for fear of losing something valuable? Or is friendship the perfect base from which to build a quality, lasting romantic relationship? Please leave a comment – we’d love to hear your thoughts on this topic.

Sex Club SecretsThe third novella in the Gods of Love series is Sex Club Secrets, and this menage a trois story is as hot as the others! The owner of the Secrets Club is yet another drool-worthy Greek God, whose deepest desire is to satisfy those who suffer from unrequited love. He knows what they yearn for, and is determined to give it them. Add in a super-hot body, and that’s one sexy package!

Ella is young and inexperienced. She knows her heart, that she’s in love with Kade, but she doesn’t know her own sexual desires. Luckily Anteros knows exactly what she wants, and is quite prepared to satisfy her. And he knows that mind-blowing sex is not enough–she needs love too.

The author, Jennifer Lynne, has an amazing talent for blending hot sex scenes with a sweet love affair, engaging the reader on every level. Love and lust are such a potent combo! She does however, carefully omit any pertinent details about or the physical address of this oh-so-discreet Secrets Club. So while her characters are quite sated, the reader is left quite titillated. And I hear there’s one more story in this series coming soon…

SEX CLUB SECRETS: Menage a trois romance by Jennifer Lynne

SEX CLUB SECRETS, the third instalment in the GODS OF LOVE series, will be out this month. Yay! Today I wanted to share with Sexy Romance readers both the cover (designed by the talented Kim Killion at Hot Damn Designs) and a short excerpt from this menage a trois erotic romance about friends, lovers and unrequited love:

Blurb:

Sometimes love can flourish in the most unexpected places…

Ella has been in love with her best friend Kade for as long as they’ve known each other. But her love has not been returned, and when bisexual Kade shows no signs of becoming romantic toward her, she decides to call a halt on her unrequited love and try something new by accepting an invitation to a celebrated Melbourne sex club.

Kade is distressed when the woman he is beginning to see as more than a friend decides to visit Secrets before he can reveal his feelings. He follows her into the club and witnesses her at play with the enigmatic Anteros, a sexy god-like man who seems to know exactly how to satisfy her innermost cravings. But Anteros also feeds the hidden desires within Kade. How can he admit his feelings about Ella when he’s not sure he can commit with his whole heart?

Anteros is one of the erotes, an aspect of Eros and the ancient Greek god of requited and unrequited love. He has heard the call of these would-be lovers and intends to show them that friendship can sometimes be the best place to kick start a lasting romantic relationship.

But love cannot flourish unless it is returned, and how will he convince Kade – a man who occasionally enjoys other men – that he can be true to the woman he loves? What will happen to this couple when the night ends and they return to the real world outside the door of Secrets?

Has one of the gods of love finally taken on a challenge he cannot fulfil?

ADULTS ONLY (18+) Excerpt:

Little snapshots of Ella, flickering through his mind at the most inopportune moments, took his attention away from Will and he began to wonder what it would feel like to sink into her welcoming body instead. What would it be like to have her thin legs wrap themselves around him? Would her thighs hold deceptive strength in their length, just like her fingers? What noises would she make if he bent over her and slipped his tongue along her slit or curled it around her clit? Would she taste like salty passion if he used his mouth to bring her to orgasm? What would be the expression on her face if he lay back and let her ride him as hard or as gently as she liked?

Maybe she’d look something like this. His breath fogged the glass. Oops. Too close. He pulled back a little, not wanting to obscure anything about this tableau playing out in front of him.

The man she was with, the one who seemed to be looking straight at him with that knowing and slightly malicious grin, extended a hand around to tweak one of Ella’s nipples between a powerful finger and thumb. He stretched her out, hard, over and over, as if he were trying to encourage milk from a recalcitrant udder.

Did it hurt? His jaw clenched, even as the thought of white spray streaking out the end of her long pink nipples and decorating the window in front of him sent more blood racing to his dick. But then her mouth parted and her tongue flicked out to moisten her lips. God damn. She was enjoying what was being done to her.

His knees buckled and he sat down hard on one of the bar stools.

Dear God. She looks so much sexier than I could ever have imagined.

He hadn’t thought he could get any harder and yet here he was, rigid now and threatening to explode in a sea of cum just like a teenager with a dirty magazine.

Each of the GODS OF LOVE stories are designed as stand-alone novellas so the series can be read in any order. All are united with a common theme: the erotes. In this version of the erotes’ myth, my gods of love are the children of Aphrodite and aspects of the primal god of desire – Eros. Each of these gorgeous gods has a role in modern day society – answering the call of desire and interacting with people in need. Here’s what they’re saying about Book 1 and 2:

Fashion and fun at the races

Posted by Jen in Writer's Life on 06-11-2012

As I write this post, I’ve just watched Green Moon race home to a win in this year’s Melbourne Cup. I am sitting at my sister’s house in an outer suburb of the city, surrounded by family, and the grey heavens have opened in a heavy spring downpour, but despite the clouds everyone is still hyped up from cheering home their “pick” in the only horse race I know that comes with its very own Public Holiday.

Here in Australia we call it the race that stops a nation. The Cup has everyone breathless at race time on the first Tuesday in November, when 24 of the world’s finest horses thunder around the extra-long 3,200 meter track.

In Melbourne our family gathers for a barbeque and to watch the famous race on our television screen. This is something duplicated in many houses across the city and indeed, around the whole state. And just for this one day of the year, we all become “experts” at judging the horses, the jockeys, and of course, the track, to figure out who’s going to win!

For those lucky enough to attend the actual event at Flemington – the highlight of our spring racing carnival – it is not just about the horses, of course. It is equally about fun, fashion and fascinators. Especially the fascinators!

The first “Fashions on the Field” event was held back in 1962, as a PR initiative to encourage more women to attend the races. Since then, fashions at the spring racing carnival have captured the imagination of the public and are now firmly entrenched for all, not just for the ladies. The Melbourne Cup has become a spectator sport for fashion-watchers – and now even celebrity-spotters – as much as for the actual racing itself.

What does this have to do with sexy romance, you ask? Not much, I admit! But I thought it might be fun for a change to offer a little snapshot into a writer’s life outside the pages of her erotic books, on that one day of the year when the locals have an excuse to dress up in our finest.

Of course, I now have a story simmering in the back of my mind that will use as its backdrop all the color, vibrancy and cheeky yet elegant fun of the racetrack on Cup Day. Stay tuned!

Jennifer Lynne writes sensual and erotic romance including the popular GODS OF LOVE series. MMF menage a trois romance, PLATINUM PASSION, was a Best Book of 2011 nominee in GLBT Fantasy Romance at The Romance Reviews. The recently released transsexual romance, APHRODITE CALLING, was a Book of the Month nominee at LASR and is garnering great reviews at Amazon and Goodreads.

Here’s an ADULT (18+) rated taste of APHRODITE CALLING:

Without sight she could only imagine what he would look like, the tip of his tongue sliding along her flesh that was already swollen with need, that wayward hair flopping down over his brow, his gaze intense, probably flecked with the shade of green that for some reason reminded her of the sea, looking back up her body as he teased around and over her mound. When the graze of something hard—presumably his teeth—nipped at her clitoris through the material she yelped, then pressed upward to enhance that exquisite pressure. Hot lips met her thrust and played with her, moistening the material. Lips, tongue, and teeth worked in unison to torment her core while his fingers slipped beneath her G and went exploring along her slit.

A gasp escaped as she felt one of his digits slide into her. The first person other than her surgeon or herself ever to breach her pussy. She didn’t have the creamy moistness of a biological woman, but somehow, with Himeros, it didn’t seem to matter. She rocked back and forth against his face, adjusting to the feel of having someone inside her, even if it was only his finger.

“Yes,” she managed on a shaky exhale of breath. “That feels fucking fantastic.”

He chuckled against her clit. “So tight, Gina. I look forward to entering you properly.”

She felt the words and the laugh as a welcome vibration and it escalated her senses into overdrive. She moaned. Having her cock sucked in the past had never felt like this.

Eat your way to a better orgasm!

I was cleaning out my fridge the other day – not very erotic, I agree! But I was using the time to think about a little plot issue in my latest erotic WIP, and as I removed the now rather wilted asparagus I was reminded of a post I wrote some time ago on food-related aphrodisiacs, and I’d like to share part of that post here:

Some foods, of course, are classically associated with love or sex, such as chocolate (which contains theobromine and helps produce feel-good endorphins in the brain), or strawberries (classed as an aphrodisiac since the times of ancient Rome). But what other sexy treats might be found in our own fridge or pantry?

That humble asparagus – no doubt in its less wilted form – is purported to help men reach orgasm more easily. Did you know that it was a custom in 19th century France for bridegrooms to be served asparagus before their wedding? Avocadoes are another food that are great for male sexuality – it was prized for its aphrodisiac qualities by the Aztecs, whose name for an avocado actually translates to “testicle”.

What about for us women, you ask? I can offer you basil, which is known to cure headaches (very useful, and I guess it tastes better than an aspirin!), and almonds, which apparently are great for increasing libido in women. Figs – one of my favorite fruits – were prized more highly than gold in ancient Greece due to their so-called “erotic” properties.

Saffron and ginseng are both reported to improve sexual performance, as do bananas (not because of their tantalizing shape, but because bananas contain the nutrients needed to boost sexual hormones in our system).

Nutmeg is another spice that apparently helps raise body temperature and has the added advantage of sweetening the breath of your loved one!

And of course, how could I forget caviar? From a nutritional point of view, it offers a source of protein that bodes well for energy levels, but from a romantic point of view, I think the symbolism of life and fertility, coupled with the delicious flavor and texture in the mouth, makes this one my aphrodisiac of choice.

So, do you really think it is possible to eat your way to a better orgasm? Are there any special foods you love? Any I haven’t mentioned here that you recommend? For a little inspiration, here is a scene involving chocolate body paint from my erotic romance, PANDORA’S GIFT:

“Hmm.” She pretended to consider her options. “This canvas is nice and blank. Where should I start?” Her paint-laden index finger connected with his nipples. Like hard little pebbles against her cushioned fingertips, the feel of him sent a tremor right to her core. “Here?” She swirled across his ribs, down his abdomen, dipping into one of the shadowed areas that highlighted his impressive six-pack. “Or here?” She swept lower, into the tangle of hair that denoted the start of his manhood, loving the sound of the groan that escaped his lips. “Yes,” she said. “Definitely here.” She refreshed the chocolate on her fingers and curled her hand around the hard, hot center of him, stroking up toward the tip and back again.

“Ah, Pandora,” he whispered, the words coming out shaky and almost incoherent. “You’re a witch, baby, and you’ve got me enslaved.”

“I am a witch, Flint. Haven’t you figured that out yet?” She looked down, tightened her grip momentarily. “And this is one giant chocolate bar I’ve been itching to taste.”

She dropped to her knees and took him into her mouth, almost swooning at the elemental taste of Flint coated in chocolate. She felt his fingers twisting in her hair, clutching, pushing her deeper, encouraging the rhythm, heard his rumbling sigh of pleasure, then he was lifting her up and off him, grabbing her by the arms and depositing her firmly on the kitchen bench top.

“Oh!” She couldn’t help protesting. “That’s cold!”

He stood over her, eyes dark with desire, reaching for chocolate. “This’ll warm you up.”

She leaned back instinctively, spread her legs a little wider, and moaned as the body paint, warmed by his fingers, drizzled down the valley of her vulval lips, followed closely by his questing tongue. The twin sensations of hot and cold, the hard granite beneath her buttocks, the heat of his lips and tongue on her core, was like that knife edge between pleasure and pain that seemed to mark all their lovemaking. “I love it,” she said.

The phallic world of the ancient Greeks

Posted by Jen in Erotic Romance, GLBT, Sexy Stories on 12-09-2012

The research for my erotic romance series, GODS OF LOVE, has taken me to some interesting places. So many ancient Greek gods, so many myths, so much lust and intrigue from which to weave a story or three.

My latest WIP in the series, SEX CLUB SECRETS, has led me on a merry dance, research-wise. From a virtual tour inside a modern-day NY sex club, to articles and posts about sex toys and their uses in the ancient world. Yep. A very merry dance indeed!

Did you know that the earliest known dildo was made of stone and dates back more than 30,000 years to the late Stone Age?

To the ancient Greeks, and therefore to the gods who populate my GODS OF LOVE novellas, the penis was a symbol of fertility, even more so than a woman’s womb. In one simplified version of Greek mythology, the male god Zeus gave birth to the Olympian gods. Any wonder then, that the humble dildo, often made of leather or wood, was a popular toy for both men and women?

Called an olisbo, these phallic shaped objects feature regularly in the art of the ancient Greeks, which often show a man using an olisbo to pleasure a woman, or a woman using one to pleasure herself. Feminists have suggested that the dildo featured so prominently because the ancient Greek culture of penis worship could not conceive of sex without a phallus being present in some way.

Incidentally, olive oil, so common today in our kitchens and restaurants, doubled back then as a pretty effective lube!

This mindset of phallus worship has pervaded my GODS OF LOVE stories thus far, and will continue for now in SEX CLUB SECRETS, an erotic M/M/F novella featuring Ella, her best friend Kade, and their meeting with Anteros, the ancient god of unrequited love and one of the erotes (aspects of Eros).

This is the third instalment in the series that began in PLATINUM PASSION with Pothos, Jake and Jeannie, followed by the recently released transsexual romance, APHRODITE CALLING.

Here is a short Adult-rated snippet from APHRODITE CALLING (GODS OF LOVE #2) that illustrates this ongoing celebration of the male sex organ:

His torso was everything she had already known it would be from her brief exploration of his body a few minutes earlier. Chiseled muscle and smooth caramel skin, the nipples small and hard like decorative brown pebbles in a chest so magnificent she’d never seen one like it before outside of a cinema.

“Whoa.” She scooted onto her elbows, then sat up fully to watch as he removed the rest of his clothing. “So, you work out how many hours a day?”

He was facing slightly away from her, sliding off his underwear, revealing a tight butt and strong thigh muscles that flexed as he bent then straightened. He turned his head to stare at her over his left shoulder and her breath caught at the look of sheer desire in his eyes. He does look like a god, she thought. A sex god. How the hell did I get so lucky?

“I don’t need to work out, Gina. I am a god of love. I get all the exercise I need in other ways.”

There was no mistaking what he meant. The fire from his gaze suffused her body. He turned to face her fully, then, and the breath she was holding escaped in a gasp borne of panic and craving. He was enormous; there was no other word for it. The cock jutted out and up, fully erect. His balls beneath were large as well, but pulled up tightly near his body. Clearly he was almost ready to release himself. She remembered what that felt like.

No wonder he’s breathing so hard.

She focused on the network of veins beneath the darkened flesh and the glistening drop of pre-cum crowning his cock. She wanted to lean over and take him into her mouth, taste the juice of this gorgeous Adonis and suck him into abandon. The musky smell of impending sex surrounded her.

But the panic that edged her need refused to go away. There was no way she’d be able to take him inside her. He was just too big. He’d rip apart all the good work her surgeon had done. And yet…he looked just as she imagined a god of love might look. So tempting. So incredibly, fucking hot. So exactly what she needed to really make herself feel like a woman.

“I want to taste your cock, Himeros.” Maybe he’d come in her mouth and she wouldn’t have to take him into her pussy. She wanted to, though. Oh, lord, how she wanted to feel Himeros deep inside her body; his rock-hard dick sheathed tightly in her vagina. A man inside her properly for the very first time.

Buy APHPRODITE CALLING at Amazon, Barnes & Noble or All Romance ebooks.

Now here’s a little Adult-rated snippet from the first novella in the series, PLATINUM PASSION:

She tried reaching out to Jake as she saw the tell-tale signs of fluid on his cock shining in the moonlight, but was pinned too effectively beneath Pothos. He was so close to coming and she wanted him inside her.

She wanted both of them sheathed inside her.

Pothos saw what she was striving for. “Come, Jake,” he said. “Join us.”

He rolled to the side, stilled impaled inside Jeannie and taking her with him, and then she felt her husband behind her, the juicy head of his cock pressing into her rear.

“Okay?” Jake’s voice was hoarse and she knew what he was really asking. This was something she’d never let him do before, and she bit her lip. Could she do this? Could she take both of them at once? Would it hurt?

“Yes,” she sobbed. “Do it, Jakey.”

And he did, gliding into her with an ease she wasn’t expecting, so slick with pre-cum that it made his entry relatively painless.

Pothos groaned, possibly at the pressure of Jake’s entry tightening her vaginal passage around him. She was so full of man she was afraid she might burst. Then they both began to drive into her body, first one, then the other, tag teaming, separated only by a thin sheath of her inner flesh, and the world as she knew it splintered around her.

When romance and real life collide

Marriage proposalRight now I’m on my honeymoon, and hopefully relaxing on a tropical beach in far north Queensland – and yes, for those who’ve read PLATINUM PASSION, it is that beach! It was my turn to post at Sexy Romance this week, but as I’m far from a computer, I thought I’d leave you with an article I wrote for my own blog 18 months ago, about our marriage proposal:

This post equally could have been titled, “How the romance author got a lesson in romance”.

I consider myself a realist. I write about romance and the bigger-than-real-life heroes who sweep my heroines off their feet and into the best damn relationship of their lives because, for me, that is escapism from real life. Not a reflection of it.

But romance and real life are not mutually exclusive, and I, of all people, should have remembered that. So what does happen to someone like me when your own imperfect real life hero (you know, the one who snores REALLY LOUDLY, or the one who changes the TV channel 25 times a minute, or the one who walks over your just mopped floor with muddy shoes – and doesn’t even notice what he’s done!) bowls you over with so much romance that the situation might well have come straight from the pages of a romance novel?

You get speechless, is what happens! Me, a writer, lost for words? Yep. And I almost ruined the moment.

He wanted to go into town for the weekend. Right before Christmas. Are you joking? I kept asking. There’s too much to do.

Nope. He wasn’t joking.

He booked us in to a five star hotel – a room on the 23rd floor with the most magnificent panoramic views of the city. From the Melbourne Cricket Ground, up the winding Yarra River to the Arts Centre spire, and beyond, to the bay sparkling in the summer sun. It took my breath away. But that was only the beginning.

Melbourne city viewsHe whisked me off on a riverboat cruise, from Southbank over to Williamstown and back, then to Collins Street to buy me a fancy dress, then off to a French restaurant for dinner (wearing the fancy new dress!). I kept grabbing at his hand all the time – why did he keep reaching into his pocket instead of entwining his fingers in mine? Why did he seem so nervous?

I discovered why when we were finally back in the room with the city lights spread out before us in all their Christmas glory, and he got down on one knee and pulled a ring out of the aforementioned pocket. He proposed in such a romantic way, and with such amazing views as a floor to ceiling backdrop, that I became speechless. Literally. I was so shocked I couldn’t speak for five minutes.

His smile faltered towards the end, and he finally asked, “Well? Is it a yes?”

Yes! Of course it was a yes! He brought all the romance to the moment that I could possibly wish for or imagine, and I, the romance author, brought nothing but silence and big, goggly eyes.

But I’ve tried to make up for it since then, and hopefully he knows how much I appreciate the whole experience, and that for me his proposal will be one of “those” moments that are remembered always.

I love the romance genre, not least because the possibility of romance and real life colliding is always there in the back of my mind. For me, it is about living in hope that one day, such happiness could possibly be mine. I have been reminded in the most wonderful way that being a realist and being a romantic can, indeed, go hand in hand. And when real life and romance do collide… let the fireworks really begin. :)

Unlikely Marriages

We’re halfway through summer here in the U.S., and I’ve just finished the first draft of another book – Jason’s story, the still untitled second book in my Mustangs baseball series. I deserve a break, and I’m taking one while my Beta reader picks apart my efforts.

With my daughter getting married in a few months, and one of our Sexy Romance authors, Jennifer Lynne, saying ‘I do’ in a few weeks, I’ve got marriage on my mind.  (Congratulations, Jen!) So, attempting to reacquaint myself with what’s been going on while I’ve been sequestered in my writing cave, I came upon a news story I had to check out.

Unlikely marriages are the staple of romance novelists, but this one? Well, judge for yourself.

It seems  Robinson Funeral Home in Easley, South Carolina is getting married – well sort of. They’re getting married to a Starbucks coffee shop.

Yep. True story. You can read all about it here.

It’s technically an expansion, but when two things come together to form one – that’s a marriage – right? They claim it will simply be a coffee shop, complete with a cozy fireplace, that sells the famous brand coffee. Sells. Coffee. To grieving friends and relatives. Or are they hoping to create a new revenue stream, drawing in customers who have no other reason to visit their establishment than that they’re dying for a cup of java and a pastry? Or maybe they’re trying to attract more tech savvy mourners. I can’t think of any other reason a funeral home needs free Wi-Fi.

Full Disclosure – I’ve been to Easley. It’s not far from where my daughters live in upstate South Carolina. In fact, I was there just a few days before I saw this story. The highway running through the town is lined with strip malls, fast food joints, red lights and churches. It’s home to at least one mega-church, as well as undoubtedly, the biggest McDonald’s I’ve ever seen – which BTW also has free Wi-Fi and coffee. One-upmanship seems to be a recurring theme in Easley, which might account for a funeral home installing a coffee shop.

As unlikely as this arrangement is, combination businesses are not as rare as one might think. Years ago, I remember seeing this improbable mix in western Massachusetts. Dave’s Soda and Pet City has five locations to serve your thirst and pet needs.

If you know me at all, you know I can spend hours doing precisely nothing, so it shouldn’t surprise you that I went in search of other businesses to add to my list of marriages made in corporate heaven. Here are a few more I thought were particularly interesting – or disturbing, as the case may be.

In the heart of Tornado Alley, this Kansas business might want to add a church too. They wouldn’t have to change the signage too much. <grin> Seriously, mobile homes in that part of the country should come with a free storm shelter.

I found this rather disturbing one in El Cajon, California . Guns & Liquor? This is soooo not a good idea!

And seriously, Ft. Madison, Iowa looks like a lovely town, but who thinks this is a okay?

Never one to pass up a bookstore, this is an interesting business in San Jose, California. Yep, that’s a combination cleaners and, I’m assuming, library specializing in Spanish language books.

And, in all fairness to the funeral home in Easley, perhaps they aren’t the first such establishment to seek a new revenue stream. I found this one in Ontario, Canada. I can almost understand the furniture business – you know, caskets and commodes? Kind of has a ring to it, don’t you think?

I know there are other strange ones out there, so bring it on folks! Tell me about your favorite unlikely business marriage.
