Review – The 90 Day Rule by Diane Nelson

Who says love and romance is only for the twenty-something crowd? I’m a firm believer that there’s no expiration date on a woman’s heart, and THE 90 DAY RULE by Diane Nelson proves the point.

Jes’s story is one far too many women have lived. At an early age, her dreams fell under the bus that was her husband’s career, relegating her to the subservient role of token wife in charge of nothing but raising the perfect child and projecting the image of the perfect family. It’s all about keeping up images, until she catches her philandering husband in bed with a woman/girl young enough to be his daughter.

Fresh out of options, Jes is sleeping on the sofa in her daughter’s college digs while she tries to knit together a new life with tattered threads from the old one. Help comes from an unexpected source, but like most gifts, it comes with strings attached – play the devoted wife for ninety days, long enough to get her husband re-elected, in exchange for a quick divorce complete with a financial settlement that will allow her to resuscitate her dreams.

This is a wonderfully refreshing read jam-packed with real emotion and realistic conflict. As a reader well past the twenty-something mark, I appreciate a mature heroine with mature issues. Can she pick up where she left off all those years ago? Are the dreams of her youth no longer attainable or realistic at her age? What, exactly, does she have to offer the world? What is she to do with unexpected desire, and the important question in any romance, can she dare to love again?

I loved Jes’s journey from lost and broken to grounded and strong. The transformation isn’t easy, but real life rarely is. THE 90 DAY RULE is honest, and real, and fabulous, as well as refreshing, bold, and well written with layers upon layers to make a reader think. I give it five stars for originality in a genre that too often takes the freeway when a side road might be more interesting.

Killer Kisses recommended by Roz Lee

I’ve long been a fan of Sharon Buchbinder’s work, so when she compiled seven of her shorter works into a smorgasbord-like anthology – I was thrilled! KILLER KISSES is a wonderful collection of unique and individual works, surprisingly from the same author. Where many authors are one-trick ponies, unable to break out of the proverbial mold, Ms. Buchbinder isn’t one of them. With this collection, she showcases her many and varied writing talents across the contemporary romance genre. If you’re looking for something you can read in short bursts, this is the book for you, but don’t be surprised if you sit down to read one of the short stories and end up not putting it down until you’ve finished the entire collection. Ms. Buchbinder’s characters are rich and her story lines full of surprising depth. Her writing style will pull you in and hold you captive from beginning to end.

Power Play recommended by Jennifer Lynne

I read this erotic romance soon after its release and it is a story that has stayed in my mind as one of my favorites. And that is saying something because believe me, I read a lot! So what was it about POWER PLAY that grabbed and held my attention above so many others in this genre? In her novel, Ms. Dancer does a beautiful job traversing that fine line between super-sexy and kink – so good a job in fact, that I went out and bought some almond oil after reading this sizzling story. Enough said! That enticing promise (or threat!) of light BDSM in my romance reading is a place that at times I love, and at others I am not so comfortable in, but the playful tone of Ms. Dancer’s story drew me in and held my interest throughout. The ambiguity of the term “power play” relating both to Liz and Sergio’s sexual activity and their respective places in the corporate world added an extra layer of interest and helped boost the eroticism brewing between these two characters. I will never look at almond oil – or my partner’s business ties – in the same way again. This book is a finalist in the RWA Passionate Plume awards (novella category) and in my opinion, deservedly so. If you like your romance sizzling hot with a hint of kink, this read is just perfect.

Sweet Carolina recommended by Sharon Buchbinder

Vrrrroom, vrrroom, ladies, start your engines with Roz Lee’s SWEET CAROLINA! When Caudell (Dell) Wayne gets suspended from NASCAR racing and loses his ride, the only thing he expects to do is sit in his lavish home, drink beer and brood over fulfilling his dead father’s prophecy that he would never live up to his arch enemy, Dickhead Warner. Unbeknownst to him, his childhood friend and gear head gal pal, Caroline Hawkins, has grown up and taken over her deceased dad’s racing team. She watches Dell’s demise from afar, first with dismay, then with a glimmer of hope for her deteriorating finances. If she can keep Madman Dell from killing himself and wrecking cars, maybe, just maybe, she can bring her family company back from the brink of financial ruin. When she shows up on his doorstep with the outrageous proposal that he should drive for her, she expects him to turn her down. Instead, he says yes and it’s not just the metal wheels on the concrete walls that spark. He’s an employee, untouchable, or so her brain says. Her body has other thoughts. He knows she’s the boss and he thinks she looks sexy in–and out–of greasy overalls. The fire suits won’t stop the flames that ignite between these two. Will he win the right races and find his soul and soul mate? Or will their relationship crash and burn on the sharp twists and turns of Roz Lee’s unexpected plot twists? I’m not giving you the answers, but I can tell you, I will never look at NASCAR races and racers the same way again after reading this book. Get some ice cubes before you start, it’s a scorching read.

A Brave New Woman: Aphrodite Calling

A brave new woman – that’s an apt description of the heroine in Jennifer Lynne’s new erotic novella, Aprodite Calling. Before I read the book, I was not sure if I’d like this transsexual woman, but as soon as I met Gina, I couldn’t help but like her. She’s strong and brave, and fragile and vulnerable, all at the same time. She’s one-of-a-kind, and yet she’s just like every one of us.

And then there’s her hunky hero. If you thought his brother was hot in Platinum Passion, look out for Himeros, he’s even hotter! This series is about the Greek gods of love, and each of them is a sexy blend of human appetites and god-like powers. Sort of super-heroes of sexuality. And of course each one has the body of, well, a Greek god!

Now how do these two fit together? Amazingly well actually–their bodies fit together as perfectly as their needs. She fills a need in him that no one else has even seen before. And he touches her in a new way, bringing her to heights she’d never dreamed of.

This story is sexy and erotic, romantic, and surprisingly sweet. In the end, it is the author who is the brave woman, giving us a new story that will stay with us long after the heat of the moment dissipates, because these two characters will reach in and touch your heart.

Aphrodite Calling (Gods of Love #2) is available now at Amazon, Smashwords and All Romance ebooks.

Review – Inside Heat by Roz Lee

As an author of ménage romance myself, I was keen to sample Roz Lee’s latest ménage a trois erotic romance, INSIDE HEAT, and boy, did she deliver a home run or three!

I loved INSIDE HEAT for many reasons – well-drawn and likeable characters (yep, made it to first base), an introduction to the fascinating world of baseball, where “inside heat” takes on a multitude of meanings (second base) plus sizzling M/F/M sex scenes (definitely third base).

So we’re sitting at third base right now, feeling hot and horny – what makes this one a home run?

Well, most of all, I loved Ms. Lee’s story because it offers more than simply a bit of hot ménage sex against a backdrop of professional baseball. Essentially, INSIDE HEAT crossed over from a piece of erotica into a true love story, and that’s what makes this one a home run, in my view.

Jeff and Jason Holder are stars of the Mustangs baseball team. Megan is a pediatric nurse who meets the famous twins when she seeks an autograph for one of her patients. Their developing ménage liaison moves from physical gratification to a full committed relationship in a way that is believable despite Megan’s misgivings. But when the balance of attraction shifts to a situation where one or more of these very real characters might miss out on their Happy Ever After, the story takes on a more subtle and complex layer.

Ms. Lee has created three protagonists who all – to differing degrees – find their hearts engaged and at risk of being broken.

INSIDE HEAT delivers everything an erotic romance needs to make it all the way home, with an emotion-packed love story in which the Happy Ever After is not necessarily a given.

I look forward to the next volume in the MUSTANGS BASEBALL series.

Review – Killer Kisses by Sharon Buchbinder

I’m a big fan of buffets. There’s plenty of variety, and you can sample things you’ve never tried before without committing to a full course of the stuff. That’s why I like Sharon Buchbinder’s, KILLER KISSES  – A Short Story Anthology. From short to novella length, from sweet to sexy paranormal, there’s something for everyone inside the covers of this single author contemporary romance anthology.

Ms. Buchbinder has amassed a wonderfully varied body of work that drew me in from the very beginning with a short story set in the midst of a hurricane evacuation. Yeah, I know. Not your usual setting for romance, but the author pulled it off, giving me enough of a taste to keep me turning pages to see what else she had to offer.

If there is a common thread in all the stories, besides kisses of one sort or another (duh!), it’s a strong heroine. Ms. Buchbinder’s female characters are strong and capable. Life occasionally gives them a kick in the gut, but they get right back up and fight for what they want and need. Now that’s my kind of woman!

Subtly woven through the stories, the subtext of morality adds to the depth of the characters. It’s easy to like these people. I especially liked Sandra in THE LAKE PLACID CURE. She’s got a world of issues of her own to solve, but when she sees something that doesn’t look right to her trained eye, she’ll move heaven and earth to set it right.

A SIZZLING SMOOCH: BONDED FOR LIFE, sets up the characters later found in Ms. Buchbinder’s full-length romantic suspense novel, DESIRE AND DECEPTION, as well as the fictional town of Summerville, New York, whose inhabitants make an encore appearance in the next story, a novella – DELECTABLE AND DELICIOUS: AN INN DECENT PROPOSAL.

BONDED FOR LIFE takes us into the dangerous world of international drug trafficking. When Lola, a one-time resident, tries to sneak back into town, bringing trouble with her. An old high school friend, now a police officer, is there to serve and protect! And, he does both very well.

In AN INN DECENT PROPOSAL, we’re back in Summerville where two former residents, both looking for a new start in familiar surroundings, find themselves after the same thing – the old Summerville Inn. This is a much sweeter story than BONDED FOR LIFE, but the characters are deliciously flawed, lending a depth not often found in stories this sweet.

The anchor piece, KISS OF THE SILVER WOLF is perfectly capable of standing on its own, and adds a paranormal element to the author’s repertoire, with shape shifters living amongst us normal folk. Look close for the underlying messages about accepting ourselves for who we are and persecution of people and groups different from us. This story works on many levels, not the least of which is the theme of love conquers all.

I’ve purposely skipped a few stories, just so you’ll still have a few surprises waiting for you. Over all, I thoroughly enjoyed this read. It’s refreshing to find so much variety in one place, as well as stories that stimulate your brain and bring a smile to your lips. Pucker up. KILLER KISSES is a fantastic read from start to finish.
